Believe it or not there are actually five states of matter, the traditional three that you have already learnt about previously (click here to get a reminder);

The additional two are Plasma and Bose-Einstein Condensates. Below is a brief introduction to them.

Plasma – This actually makes up most of the known matter in the universe!

Bose-Einstein Condensates – Don’t get scared by the use of the term ‘Quantum’

So the fifth state, the Bose-Einstein Condensate is a bit quirky really. It is extremely hard to achieve such a state because you need to cool things down to a fraction of a degree above absolute zero (-273.15^{0}C ). Getting things this cold is very difficult – even deep space has a temperature of 2.725^{0}C which is not cold enough to achieve this temperature!
